Tips For Writing A Resume For IT Work

Posted on: 4 May 2016

If you are trying to get a job in the field of Information Technology, or IT, then you are going to need to make sure that you have a resume that shows potential employers exactly what you are capable of and what you will be able to provide for your company. Here are some tips.

1. Include Specific Technologies With Your Previous Industry Experience

Your first step is to make sure that you include the specific technologies that you are familiar with, including operating systems, server classes, and other technologies, in with your industry experience. This will allow employers to get some context for the skills that you list and estimate how skilled or experienced you are using those respective technologies. You want to optimize this section for both humans and computers. Potential employers might scan entire batches of resumes and only interview those whose resumes contain the phrase "Windows 10." You want to be sure to include this key phrase naturally in your resume so that it is still human-readable, but make sure that it's there. Consider making the text bold for specific technologies so that a recruiter skimming your resume will be guaranteed to see these phrases.

2. Include Experience With Customers

If you are going to be working in IT, there is a good chance that you are going to be working with customers or with other employees at the company who need help getting specific pieces of technology to work. The last thing any company wants to do is hire an IT professional that frustrating for other people to work with and get help from. You can show that you are not going to be this type of employee by simply including your experience working with the public, as well as your general performance review results about your customer service abilities. If customer service work is your strong suit, make sure that you include a reference from your past employer or any past employer for whom your provided customer services to vouch for your abilities.

3. Have Exact Numbers of Tickets Filled

Finally, there is a great deal of emphasis placed on filling complaint or service tickets for IT jobs. If you know that the company at which you are applying uses a ticketing system and your last job used a similar system, include on your resume the average number of tickets you were able to fill each day.
